Acts Chapter 8

The Baptism of the Holy Spirit

"JUDEA AND SAMARIA": PHILLIP AND THE ETHIOPIAN EUNUCH

It must be mentioned that, in each of the areas opened up to the Gospel, it took an apostle. Peter opened up Jerusalem (Acts 1-2); Peter and John in Judea and Samaria (Acts 8); and Paul out to the uttermost, to us. Acts 1:8
But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

• This chapter through chapter 12, is "Judea and Samaria", a major division in Acts

Acts 8:1
And Saul was consenting unto his death. And at that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judaea and Samaria, except the apostles.

John 7:38-39
He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

• Acts 8:1...............Acts 1:8 | fulfillment.................prophecy
• Stephen is the first RECORDED martyr, but probably not the first, certainly not close to being the last!
• This would be included in the time in Paul's life that he referred to as being "counted as dung"
• But Jesus used Saul, (later Paul) to fulfill His prophecy of the dispersion (Matthew 28:19-20, Acts 1:8).
• This is precisely why and how we ourselves got the Gospel-the Dispersia from persecution
• This is the beginning of the martyrdom, as recorded in Foxes Book of Martyrs
• Acts 1:8 said that this is the order of dispersion, Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, the uttermost parts of the earth
• Saul in actuality did the Church a favor in scattering them, which is how we got the Gospel
• Persecution makes the church grow

Acts 1:8
But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

Philippians 3:8
Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,

Acts 8:2
And devout men carried Stephen to his burial, and made great lamentation over him.

• The religious leaders killed him and left him for others to bury
• Burial: a sure picture is of sowing a seed, death (sleep) and resurrection. (1 Corinthians 15:42-44)
  You do not burn a seed when you bury it.
• This is not about legalism, as God can and will give anyone saved a new glorified body, no matter how they die or are buried (or not). It is merely a testimony of the Gospel.
• Both groups were very devout, it is just a question of devout....for what. The disciples were devout for the true God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. The Pharisees, Sadducees were devout for their religion
• The only reason, therefore, for God mentioning that the men were devout is their devotion to HIM
• Murder was in their hearts to offer the Messiah over to the Romans. It was in their hearts to kill anyone who reminded them of this as well

1 Corinthians 15:42-44
So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption: It is sown in dishonour; it is raised in glory: it is sown in weakness; it is raised in power: It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.

Proverbs 30:15-16
The horseleach hath two daughters, crying, Give, give. There are three things that are never satisfied, yea, four things say not, It is enough: The grave; and the barren womb; the earth that is not filled with water; and the fire that saith not, It is enough.

DEVOUT, a. [L. See Devote.]

1. Yielding a solemn and reverential attention to God in religious exercises, particularly in prayer.
   We must be constant and devout in the worship of God.
2. Pious; devoted to religion; religious.
   Simeon was a just man and devout. Luke 2.
   Devout men carried Stephen to his burial. Acts 8.
3. Expressing devotion or piety; as, with eyes devout.
4. Sincere; solemn; earnest; as, you have my devout wishes for your safety.

5. DEVOUT, n. A devotee. [Not used.]

Acts 8:3
As for Saul, he made havock of the church, entering into every house, and haling men and women committed them to prison.

• "Haling" simply means hauling them into court.
• Men and women both were witnessing, being persecuted
• Jailed for their faith, just like today, coming soon here

THE PERSECUTION AND THE SPREADING OF THE GOSPEL: PAUL

Philippians 1:12-18
But I would ye should understand, brethren, that the things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel; So that my bonds in Christ are manifest in all the palace, and in all other places; And many of the brethren in the Lord, waxing confident by my bonds, are much more bold to speak the word without fear. Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good will: The one preach Christ of contention, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my bonds: But the other of love, knowing that I am set for the defence of the gospel. What then? notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretence, or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice.

Philippians 3:4-6
Though I might also have confidence in the flesh. If any other man thinketh that he hath whereof he might trust in the flesh, I more: Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee; Concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless.

HAV'OCK, n. Waste; devastation; wide and general destruction.
Ye gods! what havock does ambition make
Among your works.
As for Saul, he made havock of the church. Acts 8.
HAV'OCK, v.t. To waste; to destroy; to lay waste.
To waste and havock yonder world.

Acts 22:4
And I persecuted this way unto the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.

Acts 26:11
And I punished them oft in every synagogue, and compelled them to blaspheme; and being exceedingly mad against them, I persecuted them even unto strange cities.

1 Timothy 1:13
Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.

Acts 8:4
Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word.

• Dispersed, but faithful, bold, steadfast
• They went to every place to preach THE WORD, not dwell on their problems, not just to flee persecution (which they were doing), not to grumble, not to whine
• The Church can NEVER be hurt from the outside; only from the INSIDE, by corrupt, deceptive false leaders, ravening wolves, false teachers, "the blind leading the blind"---and that only because and when the sheep are not like the Bereans
• The "they" is men and women. No women are ever called into an official church office such as and apostle, an elder, a bishop, a "deaconness", for ministry, but are called to preach the Gospel like everyone else

1 Timothy 2:9-15
In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works. Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. For Adam was first formed, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression. Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.

1 Timothy 3:12
Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.

Acts 8:5
Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them.

• SEE JOHN chapter 4 for a context of the Jewish/Samaritan culture
• Preached CHRIST boldly, steadfastly, to Samaria (Gentiles)
• The Samaritans were not considered the same to the Jews
• Jesus commanded the disciples not to go into Samaria while He was on the earth
• This is Acts 1:8, now out to Samaria. The Samaritans were half-breeds, outcasts who had rebelled against Jerusalem's authority by building a rival temple on Mt. Gerizim

• Ten lepers were healed by Jesus there; only the Samaritan came back to thank Him

Luke 17:12-19
And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off: And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us. And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed. And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan. And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine? There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger. And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.

2 Kings 17:29
Howbeit every nation made gods of their own, and put them in the houses of the high places which the Samaritans had made, every nation in their cities wherein they dwelt.

Matthew 10:5-6
These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not: But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

Acts 8:6-7
And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. Unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed with them: and many taken with palsies, and that were lame, were healed.

• No signs, no tongues, no wonders, just healing and deliverance (v.7)
• People being in agreement, obedient to the faith
• Healing and deliverance, as today, for the lost pagan Samaritans and no tongues
• This tells us also that there are some today, maybe many, who are ill from these same exact diseases precisely because they are possessed.
• This is not for a sign, these miracles. They were needed by "many of them"
• It does not say "all of them"

Acts 8:8
And there was great joy in that city.

• This is the joy of the LORD, and it is great, and throughout a whole city
• They have witnessed the stoning of Stephen, been hauled men and women from their homes, imprisoned, beaten, threatened, scattered
• Their response? Preaching the Word, having the joy of the LORD

Nehemiah 8:10
Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength.

Luke 15:7-10
I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance. Either what woman having ten pieces of silver, if she lose one piece, doth not light a candle, and sweep the house, and seek diligently till she find it? And when she hath found it, she calleth her friends and her neighbours together, saying, Rejoice with me; for I have found the piece which I had lost. Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.

Acts 8:9
But there was a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one:

• "But"............here comes the opposition
• As the Bruce Lee movie is called, "Enter the Dragon"
• Revivals always stir up the enemy and enemies of God, who appear as "angels of light"
• There is always, invariably, a "certain man" in every fellowship, who seems to want to fit in, but is "a wolf in sheep's clothing"
• First it is Revival, then always comes opposition
  1. A burden to pray
  2. Demon manifestations (ie. false miracles, signs, wonders)
  3. Opposition from "leaders in authority"
  4. A revealing of the "wheat" and "tares" and subsequent sifting
  5. Many Christians finding the will of God for their lives through the Word of God

• Simon deceived people with miracles, sorcery, bewitching them, not by the Holy Ghost, but by the enemy, drawing attention to Himself and many to himself. They have been "Simonized"
• Some things never change
• Today we have people dressed nicely, seemingly very expensively and humble, who do this, in front of large audiences, claiming they are the only one or ones there who can do this......they give out that they are "some great one".
• His name for himself is always good for marketing, even today
• Simon is full of Simon
• Simon Magus is the person from whom the word "Simony" comes

John 4:20
Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.

THE LEGEND OF SIMON

SIM'ONY, n. [from Simon Magus, who wished to purchase the power of conferring the Holy Spirit. Acts 8] The crime of buying or selling ecclesiastical preferment; or the corrupt presentation of any one to an ecclesiastical benefice of money or reward. By Stat. 31 Elizabeth, c. 6. severe penalties are enacted against this crime.

“Simon Magus” or "Simon the Magician" is the name given to him by many historians and eyewitnesses of this man in ancient history.
Justin Martyr (ca. AD 150), a Samaritan—identifies this particular Simon as a native of Gitto, Samaria, he, among other things, wrote a gnostic work called "The Great Revelation" . Legends speak of him as traveling with a goddess while he professed himself to be Jupiter, The Son, the Father, the Holy Spirit, one ancient legend says that Simon the Sorcerer confronted Peter in Rome, performed an act of “levitation” and other various false miracles. According to the story, Peter prayed to the LORD to stop the levitation, Simon fell to the ground, broke leg bones in many places and had to be carried off!

Matthew 7:15-23
Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.
Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

2 Corinthians 11:13-14
For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.

Ecclesiastes 9:18
Wisdom is better than weapons of war: but one sinner destroyeth much good.

Acts 8:10
To whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is the great power of God.

• Pagans performing false miracles are still revered as gods and unsaved religious people often confuse gods with God.
• "from the least to the greatest would include the leaders of the town and the poorest, with (perhaps) the leaders of the synagogue?
• This shows that "signs and wonders" are not proof of God doing a work

Acts 8:11
And to him they had regard, because that of long time he had bewitched them with sorceries.

• "Bewitching" and "sorcery" are repeated here, giving emphasis
• The esteem and praise of the world goes to false prophets, false miracle workers, deceivers.
• Having longevity furthers the cause as well, adding "validity" to the "ministry"
• This is because the world lacks the Holy Spirit for discernment
• Simon has "the subtlety of the serpent" and is selling SNAKE oil

Genesis 3:1
Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

1 John 4:1
Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

Matthew 7:15
Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

Matthew 24:4-5
And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.

Matthew 24:24
For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.

Acts 8:12
But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.

• They believed and then Simon "believed"; watch the difference
• God is much more powerful to save than the enemy to distract and deceive.
• In order to be baptized, the prerequisite is that they must be saved. Baptism is not salvation; it is getting dunked.
• His "ministry" continues today

Isaiah 63:1
Who is this that cometh from Edom, with dyed garments from Bozrah? this that is glorious in his apparel, travelling in the greatness of his strength? I that speak in righteousness, mighty to save.

2 Timothy 3:5
Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

Acts 8:13
Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done.

• Simon will become shortly proof that "believing" is what many do, but what they believe about Jesus is wrong
• His baptism will simply make him all wet
• He is seeking after a sign and looking for more power, not more of the true God
• He has a form of godliness, but denying the power (source) thereof

Acts 8:14
Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:

• Peter was sent with John....unlike a pope, he was sent by others, as a servant
• This appears to be new to them, and everyone in Jerusalem want to know how this can be so------Samaritans getting saved? What?

Acts 8:15
Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:

• Peter and John were sent to give them the Holy Ghost. One of the mistakes too many today make is in assuming that this was not a one time event, unique, and that the Holy Ghost today is given by "the laying on of hands".
• These people BELIEVED (like Simon), but were not saved ,like many today who claim to be Christian because of culture, genealogy, church attendance, works, etc.
• However, in Acts chapter 2 and chapter 10, the Holy Ghost was given WITHOUT the laying on of hands
• They and everyone else in chapter 8 do not speak in tongues-ever.
• There is no initial evidence via an outward sign of "the baptism of the Holy Ghost” here, either

2 Peter 1:1
Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:

Acts 2:38
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Acts 10:44
While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.

Acts 8:16
(For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)

• The "he" is proof that the Holy Ghost is not an "it" but a "he"; a person.
• Again, this is a transitional time in history, and needs to be treated as such
• If a person does not believe that, then today this would still be happening
1. Old Testament: Believers not indwelt as today and those who were could have that same Holy Spirit leave them (Psalm 51:11, 1 Samuel 16:14, 18:12)
2. In the Old Testament, the spirit of the LORD came upon certain people to empower them to do His divine will (Othniel-Judges 3:10, Gideon-Judges 6:34, Jepthah-Judges 11:29, David-1 Samuel 16:13)
3. In Acts, the Holy Spirit had already been given to the apostles by Jesus in John 20:28, others were simply Old Testament believers who did not receive the Holy Spirit as of yet
4. Today, no one lays hands on someone to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit
5. We are indwelt by the Holy Spirit
6. Like salvation, the giving of the Holy Spirit is free to all who ask in sincerity, as Jesus said it would be
7. This in Acts was for them in a unique time in history
8. He is exposed to Christianity and is highly impressed by what he sees, and knows he can use it for his business-all he has to do is ask how it works and then incorporate it
9. Head knowledge, going along with the flow of those multitudes being saved
10. "OUTWARD APPEARANCE"

Acts 8:17
Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.

• In verse fifteen, they received the Holy Ghost with just a prayer; no laying on of hands
• In John 20:22, the apostles received the Holy Ghost without Jesus laying hands on them
• In Acts 6:6, hands were laid upon Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch, but they did not receive the Holy Ghost
• In Acts 13:2-3, hands were laid on Paul and Barnabas, no Holy Ghost given
• The "laying on of hands" now is just a personal touch God desires for us, there is no miraculous power in anyone in particular's hands
• Here they receive the Holy Ghost and do not speak in tongues.

John 20:22
And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:

John 14:16-17
And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

Acts 6:5-6
And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch: Whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them.

Acts 13:2 As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.

Romans 8:9
But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

Romans 8:11
But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

1 Corinthians 2:11-12
For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.

Ephesians 1:13-14
In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

Acts 8:18
And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money,

• Simon today would have a five thousand member church and be on TV, radio and do book tours.
• You cannot buy a gift; this is "works" "salvation" at its finest
• More proof that he is not even saved, even though he BELIEVED and was even BAPTIZED

Acts 8:19
Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost.

• Power over people, power over situations, power over nature, power over objects
• "More Power!" is not just a saying on th TV show "Home Improvement"...fallen man always seeks it

Acts 8:20
But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money.

• Again, the Holy Ghost is a gift, freely given
• Simon is more like a modern day Benny Hinn or Kenneth Copeland, etc

Luke 11:13
If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

Acts 8:21
Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God.

• Simon, according to Simon Peter, believed, was baptized, continued with Philip, wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done
• Simon behaved just like every other Christian there, with just a tad more curiosity
• And is UNSAVED (phony, charlatan, wolf among sheep)
• Those on the inside hurt the Church; those on the outside attacking it make it grow
• Judas was on the inside and betrayed the LORD Jesus, not the Romans ,not the Jews, but a chosen apostle who passed for the real thing
• Simon is a Trojan Horse...........the enemy always joins the Church and often pastors it

Acts 8:22
Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee.

• Or............maybe he really IS saved, and just needs to ask God to forgive him?
• In either case, this fascination with the laying on of hands to receive the Holy Ghost is to him a trick, which he must change his mind about

Acts 8:23
For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity.

• Peter, it appears, has declared that this Simon is religious but in fact is still NOT SAVED
  1. Does not understand how salvation is given
  2. Does not understand the Holy Spirit is a gift
  3. Wants to use his money for the power of the Holy Spirit
  4. Does not understand the role of the Holy Spirit
  5. Wants simply to have power to do miracles
  6. Needs to be forgiven by God
  7. Needs to repent of wickedness
  8. In the gall of bitterness
  9. In the bondage of sin

Acts 8:24
Then answered Simon, and said, Pray ye to the Lord for me, that none of these things which ye have spoken come upon me.

• Simon does not even want to be saved..........he just does not want the consequences of his sin to affect his business, life, etc.
• No telling if Simon is saved or ever got saved. We only have what we see
• Over time we are to bear fruits of the spirit, not simply BELIEVE

Matthew 7:16-20
Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. • The angel of the LORD: Jesus Christ
• Verses 26-40, a new ministry, to Ethiopia
• There is, at this time in Acts, nothing there but desert to go to
• We will now witness the opposite of Simon, an unnamed eunuch who is genuine
• This is a son of Ham (chapter 8)
• Saul will be a son of Shem (chapter 9)
• Lastly, Cornelius gets saved, a Japethite (chapter 10)

Acts 8:27
And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship,

• He did not waver, stumble, question, ponder, wait, and had no other instructions
• This is similar to the faith of Abraham in Genesis 12
• The Secretary of the Treasury, in a limousine, with a chauffeur

Genesis 12:1
Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee:

Acts 8:28
Was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet.

• Searching for God

Acts 8:29
Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot.

• The Holy Spirit is still leading
• The chariot already has the man in need of salvation, the Word of God, and just needs a man of God and the Spirit of God to complete the salvation message

Acts 8:30
And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?

• He is reading loud enough to be heard by someone on a horse alongside.

Romans 10:17
So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.

• Any person can guide another person in any direction. like the blind leading the blind
• Only the Holy Spirit can guide into all truth

Acts 8:32-33
The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth: In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth.

• This is Isaiah 53, the Messianic, Suffering Servant chapter of prophecy
• He is at this point reading at verse seven, presumably having read the first six verses
• Whether Jew or a Gentile, he cannot understand the Scriptures he is reading without some man to tell him via the Holy Spirit (more important, most important)
• Jews today do not study this, and think it means the nation of Israel, suffering for the sins of the Gentiles and not a person.
• This is despite the fact that the Jews consider Isaiah to be their greatest prophet
• No place in Scripture does it mention Israel suffering for anyone other than their own sin(s), and suffering does not recompense and reconcile; it simply hurts!
• This is mentioned in some places, such as Leviticus 26:14-41, Isaiah 17:10-14, Jeremiah 30:7.
• They are very vehement that this was settled as Israel before Jesus's day and the Christians have it all wrong.
• The discussion is hot, hotter, hottest. Even the implication of insinuating that one needs to be a "completed Jew" (Messianic believer) is insulting and offensive to Jews.
• It is a HE, not a "they"
• It is a sheep, not a flock
• Israel's life was never taken from the earth, and there has always been a remnant. Besides that, God clearly, repeatedly called it, strangely enough, "A REMNANT" and "THE REMNANT"
• It requires allegorizing the Scriptures in nearly every verse without a context to conclude that this is not one man
• There is no context for such allegorizing
• There is a good, thorough, objective biblical study on Isaiah 53: here

Acts 8:34
And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man?

• Without knowing about Jesus Christ, via the Holy Spirit, this verse is meaningless and obscure
• Even the Ethiopian Eunuch sees that this is about "Himself or some other man" and not a nation

Acts 8:35
Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.

• Isaiah fifty three is a fantastic place to preach Jesus to either a Jew or a Gentile.
• This is the established method for 2,000 years now, unchanged

Acts 8:36
And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?

• It is highly probable that Phillip, after his conversion, told him about the baptism by water, not baptism of the Holy Spirit

Acts 8:37
And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

• No speaking in tongues, no laying on of hands, no "be being filled by the Holy Spirit", no circumcision just belief, faith, trust, salvation
• This is how we get saved today as Gentiles
• This very important, key and essential verse is MISSING from so many modern versions, it goes from Acts 8:36 directly to verse 38
• This separates this man from Simon, who had head knowledge and did not believe with all his heart, but was half-hearted, double-minded
• Had the Ethiopian eunuch said he did not believe with all of his heart, Phillip's job was done, he would not have baptized him, and would have left the man there, because he cannot save him or force him to believe

James 1:8
A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

Acts 8:38
And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.

• This is the only acceptable baptism..........immersions in water
• This baptism is the only one that represents the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ-and your old life dying and new life being resurrected as well!

Acts 8:39
And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing.

• Things essential to the salvation and then the obedient walk of a man are present here:
  1. The Holy Spirit (v. 25) leading
  2. Obedience to the Spirit (v. 26)
  3. The Word of God (v. 30-34)
  4. The Word of God explained as the Gospel (v. 35)
  5. The Word of God mixed with faith
• This one person getting saved led to 2,000 years, at least into 1970, when Haile Selassie (brutal murderous dictator) left the doors open for missionaries
• He rejoiced over his salvation, with the angels

Acts 7:1
Then said the high priest, Are these things so?

• Either one of two things: He himself did not know enough about his own faith, or enough about "the Way"
• He also probably was not an eyewitness to the events that brought Stephen there in the first place, so wanted some clarity
• There is no way he did not know the effect the apostles were having around Jerusalem!
• The question is from the conversation recorded in chapter 6

Acts 6:13-14
And set up false witnesses, which said, This man ceaseth not to speak blasphemous words against this holy place, and the law: For we have heard him say, that this Jesus of Nazareth shall destroy this place, and shall change the customs which Moses delivered us.

Acts 7:2
And he said, Men, brethren, and fathers, hearken; The God of glory appeared unto our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Charran,

• Men were there, his brethren in the flesh (Israelites) were there, and the fathers, leaders, priests were there. Stephen further was a young man at this time, on his last moments
• Stephen does not address the high priest directly, but everyone, like Paul did
• This is not out of disrespect, but out of God's love and their need
• The best place to begin is, of course, at the beginning!
• The title "God of glory" only appears one other place, Psalm 29:3

Psalms 29:3
The voice of the LORD is upon the waters: the God of glory thundereth: the LORD is upon many waters.

Genesis 12:1-4

• This event they all knew well, recorded in the Torah
• This is the beginning of them selves and their people-the perfect place to start

• Charran is Haran
• God waited for Abraham to finish caring for his elderly father, knowing this man could not be traipsed all over the area, being a burden to both Moses and himself

Genesis 11:32
And the days of Terah were two hundred and five years: and Terah died in Haran.

Acts 7:5
And he gave him none inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on: yet he promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when as yet he had no child.

• Having only a promise, Abraham left for an unknown place, no land or heir yet
• He was given only PART of the overall, hundreds-thousands of years plan at that time. His ONLY task was to "believe and leave"
• This means 100% on faith, 100% trusting only in God. Stephen is telling them the exact requirements for their salvation in Jesus Christ here

Genesis 15:6
And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness.

Romans 4:3
For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.

Galatians 3:6
Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.

James 2:23
And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.

Hebrews 11:8-10
By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went. • This was bondage in Egypt, the Exodus and, again, the reason for the Passover
• This Passover continues today

Genesis 15:13
And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years;

Acts 7:7
And the nation to whom they shall be in bondage will I judge, said God: and after that shall they come forth, and serve me in this place.

• This is Egypt, and their Passover celebration, the biggest one very recent to them, the sacrifice of the Lamb of God
• "This place" is the land that they are in at the time Stephen's speech, and now again today and forever

Genesis 15:13-14
And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years; And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance.

Acts 7:8
And he gave him the covenant of circumcision: and so Abraham begat Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat the twelve patriarchs.

• Circumcision was a ritual for them and theirs alone, not the Gentiles or any surrounding nations
• Now, they were expected to be circumcised in their hearts
• It was a sure fire way also to check if a man was a Jew if captured in war

Genesis 17:10-13
This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised. And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you. And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any stranger, which is not of thy seed. He that is born in thy house, and he that is bought with thy money, must needs be circumcised: and my covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant.

Romans 2:29
But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.

Acts 7:9-10
And the patriarchs, moved with envy, sold Joseph into Egypt: but God was with him, And delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favour and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and he made him governor over Egypt and all his house.

• His brothers hated because he was Jacob's favorite, for his coat of many colors and his dream about them which eventually came true
• Reuben alone tried to stop them, unsuccessfully
• We must always remember that favor and wisdom come from God, through grace, prayer, etc.
• Joseph, rejected by his own, became a great leader

Genesis 37:3-4
Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours. And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him.

Genesis 37:11
And his brethren envied him; but his father observed the saying.

And when they saw him afar off, even before he came near unto them, they conspired against him to slay him. And they said one to another, Behold, this dreamer cometh. • The road to Egypt is
  1. Sell Joseph into Egypt
  2. Make him powerful, over especially the food supply
  3. Forewarn of a great dearth
  4. Preparation for famine, storage of food
  5. Bring a dearth over the entire region, widespread
  6. Bring Jacob and his sons into Egypt
  7. Reveal long lost Joseph to his family
  8. Make Israel grow
  9. Enslave them 400 years to the Egyptians
  10. Do signs and wonders before Pharaoh
  11. Harden his heart to refuse Israel leaving
  12. Judgments upon Egypt's gods to force their hand, (their own doing)
  13. The Passover
  14. The Exodus
  15. Protection for Israel throughout

Genesis 41:54
And the seven years of dearth began to come, according as Joseph had said: and the dearth was in all lands; but in all the land of Egypt there was bread.

Acts 7:12
But when Jacob heard that there was corn in Egypt, he sent out our fathers first.

• An old man would be unwise to go on hearing of some food that far away, risking a certain desert death

Genesis 42:2-3
And he said, Behold, I have heard that there is corn in Egypt: get you down thither, and buy for us from thence; that we may live, and not die. And Joseph's ten brethren went down to buy corn in Egypt.

Acts 7:13
And at the second time Joseph was made known to his brethren; and Joseph's kindred was made known unto Pharaoh.

• The first time Joseph was not recognized in face or voice...it had been too long, and not the time yet.
• Starting at the second time, he still wasn't recognized, and had to reveal to them who he was

Genesis 42:7-8
And Joseph saw his brethren, and he knew them, but made himself strange unto them, and spake roughly unto them; and he said unto them, Whence come ye? And they said, From the land of Canaan to buy food. And Joseph knew his brethren, but they knew not him.

Genesis 45:1-4
Then Joseph could not refrain himself before all them that stood by him; and he cried, Cause every man to go out from me. And there stood no man with him, while Joseph made himself known unto his brethren. And he wept aloud: and the Egyptians and the house of Pharaoh heard. And Joseph said unto his brethren, I am Joseph; doth my father yet live? And his brethren could not answer him; for they were troubled at his presence. And Joseph said unto his brethren, Come near to me, I pray you. And they came near. And he said, I am Joseph your brother, whom ye sold into Egypt.

Acts 7:14
Then sent Joseph, and called his father Jacob to him, and all his kindred, threescore and fifteen souls.

• This is a classic example of a "contradiction in the Bible"! Can you answer it?
• Three times in the Old Testament, the number is recorded as seventy (three score and ten)
• Did Luke follow the spurious LXX?
• Stephen was "full of the Holy Ghost" and was seen as having the "face of an angel". Therefore, how could me make a mistake?
• In the passage in Genesis (chapter 46, verse 27), neither Jacob's wife Rachel (see Genesis chapter 35, verse 19) nor any of his concubines are included in the calculations, arriving at the "seventy" number.
• Despite the mention of Jacob's "daughters and his sons daughters" (Genesis 46, verse 7), it seems that the only daughter included in the calculation, arriving at the number "seventy" was Dinah (Genesis chapter 46, verse 15), and the only granddaughter mentioned was Serah (Genesis chapter 46, verse 17).
• The wives of Jacob’s sons are not included in the seventy (46:26).
• Finally, whereas only two descendants of Joseph are mentioned in Genesis 46 in the Masoretic text of the Old Testament, in the Septuagint, Joseph’s descendants are calculated as being nine.
• So, there is no error and no reason to appeal to the Septuagint (LXX), which no one in the Bible used and the English translators ignored

• Again, this verse is a perfect example of what unbelievers and conservative scholars call a "contradiction"
• Good for us, it is not. We are never to use "scientific and philosophical standards" of men (scholars)to judge whether the Bible is true on any verse, nor didthose reading and believing it in the Bible itself
• IOW, it is not our job to "correct", "criticize" or "restore" the book, jut read and believe it. It is not even our job to FULLY understand every passage, as we cannot.
  1. Abraham bought the sepulchre from the sons of Emmor, who gave birth to Shechem and other children.
  2. Ephron is a Hittite and dwells with the children of Heth (Gen. 23: 10)
  3. The field Jacob buys has nothing to do with any intention of anybody burying anybody in, nor did he intend to, according to the verses
  Abraham bought a sepulchre from the sons of Emmor, who gave birth to Shechem and other children. .

• Being fruitful and multiplying is a command to all, and Israel was blessed for doing it
• The time of the promise was the deliverance from the four hundred years of bondage in Egypt

Come on, let us deal wisely with them; lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there falleth out any war, they join also unto our enemies, and fight against us, and so get them up out of the land. Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh treasure cities, Pithom and Raamses. But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. And they were grieved because of the children of Israel.

Exodus 1:15-20
And the king of Egypt spake to the Hebrew midwives, of which the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah: And he said, When ye do the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them upon the stools; if it be a son, then ye shall kill him: but if it be a daughter, then she shall live.
But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men children alive. And the king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said unto them, Why have ye done this thing, and have saved the men children alive?
And the midwives said unto Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they are lively, and are delivered ere the midwives come in unto them. Therefore God dealt well with the midwives: and the people multiplied, and waxed very mighty.

Exodus 1:7
And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them.

Genesis 15:14
And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance.

Till another king arose, which knew not Joseph.

• This person for sure would have known OF Joseph and would have known all ABOUT Joseph
• They simply did not know him personally, and did not care who he or his people were

Now there arose up a new king over Egypt, which knew not Joseph.

The same dealt subtilly with our kindred, and evil entreated our fathers, so that they cast out their young children, to the end they might not live.

• This entire scenario was the epitome of Joseph's life, now lived out in the whole nation: "But God was with him"....

Acts 7:20
In which time Moses was born, and was exceeding fair, and nourished up in his father's house three months:

• There was a deliberate attempt to destroy the Deliverer of Israel of their bondage by the enemy
• God thwarted the attempt

Exodus 2:1-2
And there went a man of the house of Levi, and took to wife a daughter of Levi. And the woman conceived, and bare a son: and when she saw him that he was a goodly child, she hid him three months.

Acts 7:21
And when he was cast out, Pharaoh's daughter took him up, and nourished him for her own son.

• This is both God's sense of humor and the ultimate irony.
• Pharaoh's own daughter raised his future Israelite conqueror

Exodus 2:5-10
And the daughter of Pharaoh came down to wash herself at the river; and her maidens walked along by the river's side; and when she saw the ark among the flags, she sent her maid to fetch it. And when she had opened it, she saw the child: and, behold, the babe wept. And she had compassion on him, and said, This is one of the Hebrews' children. Then said his sister to Pharaoh's daughter, Shall I go and call to thee a nurse of the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for thee?
And Pharaoh's daughter said to her, Go. And the maid went and called the child's mother. And Pharaoh's daughter said unto her, Take this child away, and nurse it for me, and I will give thee thy wages. And the woman took the child, and nursed it. And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharaoh's daughter, and he became her son. And she called his name Moses: and she said, Because I drew him out of the water.

Acts 7:22
And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds.

• Moses did not consider himself mighty in words...but wrote the Torah
• Moses did not consider himself mighty in words...so God gave him Aaron

Exodus 4:10-14
And Moses said unto the LORD, O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant: but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue. And the LORD said unto him, Who hath made man's mouth? or who maketh the dumb, or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? have not I the LORD?
Now therefore go, and I will be with thy mouth, and teach thee what thou shalt say. And he said, O my Lord, send, I pray thee, by the hand of him whom thou wilt send. And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Moses, and he said, Is not Aaron the Levite thy brother? I know that he can speak well. And also, behold, he cometh forth to meet thee: and when he seeth thee, he will be glad in his heart.

Acts 7:23
And when he was full forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren the children of Israel.

• Living thirty five plus years in Egypt, is why he was "learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians"
• "it came into his heart".....from God

Exodus 2:11
And it came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown, that he went out unto his brethren, and looked on their burdens: and he spied an Egyptian smiting an Hebrew, one of his brethren.

Acts 7:24
And seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended him, and avenged him that was oppressed, and smote the Egyptian:

• It is as though Stephen is reading the books of Genesis and Exodus directly to them
• Moses was just like us; hateful of injustice

Exodus 2:11-12
And it came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown, that he went out unto his brethren, and looked on their burdens: and he spied an Egyptian smiting an Hebrew, one of his brethren. And he looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no man, he slew the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand.

Acts 7:25
For he supposed his brethren would have understood how that God by his hand would deliver them: but they understood not.

• Moses idea of the deliverance was an uprising and overthrow
• After forty years, he himself still did not understand how they would come out
• This is works versus grace through faith personified
• God's idea was for He Himself to simply do it.

Acts 7:26
And the next day he shewed himself unto them as they strove, and would have set them at one again, saying, Sirs, ye are brethren; why do ye wrong one to another?

• Moses thought no one saw or cared what he did to the Egyptian
• "Set them at one" simply means to reconcile, agree and be at peace; it does not mean to eliminate one to set two back to one!
• When it was his own beaten by his own, Moses tried to make peace. When it was his own beaten by an Egyptian, he decided to exact revenge and justice his way

Exodus 2:13
And when he went out the second day, behold, two men of the Hebrews strove together: and he said to him that did the wrong, Wherefore smitest thou thy fellow?

Acts 7:27-28
But he that did his neighbour wrong thrust him away, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge over us? Wilt thou kill me, as thou diddest the Egyptian yesterday?

• Only certain, important highlights and facts are retold by Stephen, which is specifically what they need to hear from their past
• OOPS! Busted!
• Even the people at this time did not accept Moses as a leader...who became one of the greatest ones in their history
• This shows that if God is with you, great. He will make you a great godly leader and ensure the people He wants to follow you, do so. If not, men do not make people godly leaders, just leaders who they want to follow
• Therefore, like Joseph, Moses likewise was rejected by his own people and yet became a great leader in Israel

Exodus 2:14
And he said, Who made thee a prince and a judge over us? intendest thou to kill me, as thou killedst the Egyptian? And Moses feared, and said, Surely this thing is known.

Acts 7:29
Then fled Moses at this saying, and was a stranger in the land of Madian, where he begat two sons.

• Again, part of God's timing and plan
• God took His time preparing Moses for this important role, miles apart from the Israelites.
• Perhaps because, if not, he would have become a murmurer himself, just like them

Acts 7:30
And when forty years were expired, there appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sina an angel of the Lord in a flame of fire in a bush.

• Forty is the number of testing, trials
• Forty days on the mountain
• Spies sent by Moses for forty days
• An entire Bible study can be done on just the number forty, by itself

Exodus 3:2
And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.

Acts 7:31
When Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight: and as he drew near to behold it, the voice of the Lord came unto him,

• God is jealous for His people Israel, and for us
• God is judgment in a moment and for forever for His enemies, the unbelievers

Deuteronomy 4:24
For the LORD thy God is a consuming fire, even a jealous God.

Deuteronomy 9:3
Understand therefore this day, that the LORD thy God is he which goeth over before thee; as a consuming fire he shall destroy them, and he shall bring them down before thy face: so shalt thou drive them out, and destroy them quickly, as the LORD hath said unto thee.

Hebrews 12:28-29
Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear: For our God is a consuming fire.

Acts 7:32
Saying, I am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Then Moses trembled, and durst not behold.

• This is one of God's most important names, identities, separating Himself from all other false gods, just like the title I AM
• No one could bear to look upon God Himself in their flesh
• The voice of the LORD, I AM, consuming flame of fire, jealous God, the angel of the LORD, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, who sees, hears, delivers.

Acts 7:33
Then said the Lord to him, Put off thy shoes from thy feet: for the place where thou standest is holy ground.

• The only way it can be Holy is that God is there
• Whether God is there in Spirit or in the Flesh, it is Holy Ground

Exodus 3:5
And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.

Joshua 5:15
And the captain of the LORD'S host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.

Acts 7:34
I have seen, I have seen the affliction of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning, and am come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send thee into Egypt.

• God had heard it for four hundred years straight, but it was not the time, not the season
• The time of the "fullness of the sins of the Amorites" had not come yet, either
• God has arrived personally to deliver them
• Moses has a new mission and purpose

Genesis 15:16
But in the fourth generation they shall come hither again: for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full.

Acts 7:35
This Moses whom they refused, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge? the same did God send to be a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel which appeared to him in the bush.

• "This same Moses".......is ironic
• Ruler, not a judge. Ruler and a deliverer, not a judge-not yet

Acts 7:36
He brought them out, after that he had shewed wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red sea, and in the wilderness forty years.

• Signs and wonders again for Jews, past and then in Stephen's days
• These were signs and wonders while both in Egypt (represents the world) and in the wilderness (represents trials, tests in the world)

Acts 7:37
This is that Moses, which said unto the children of Israel, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear.

• This, that Moses, is Jesus (like unto me)
• They heard from Jesus, but rejected Him
• Peter said the same thing in Acts 3

Deuteronomy 18:15
The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;

Acts 3:22
For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you.

John 4:25-26
The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things. Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.

• No Jew was to ever return back into Egypt for any reason, in any way
• No Christian is to ever go back into the world for any reason, in any way

Saying unto Aaron, Make us gods to go before us: for as for this Moses, which brought us out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.

• Egypt is idolatry, idols, false gods to worship
• Idolatry is Israel's number one sin throughout Scripture
• Some things never change

Isaiah 44:13-20
The carpenter stretcheth out his rule; he marketh it out with a line; he fitteth it with planes, and he marketh it out with the compass, and maketh it after the figure of a man, according to the beauty of a man; that it may remain in the house. He heweth him down cedars, and taketh the cypress and the oak, which he strengtheneth for himself among the trees of the forest: he planteth an ash, and the rain doth nourish it.
Then shall it be for a man to burn: for he will take thereof, and warm himself; yea, he kindleth it, and baketh bread; yea, he maketh a god, and worshippeth it; he maketh it a graven image, and falleth down thereto. And none considereth in his heart, neither is there knowledge nor understanding to say, I have burned part of it in the fire; yea, also I have baked bread upon the coals thereof; I have roasted flesh, and eaten it: and shall I make the residue thereof an abomination? shall I fall down to the stock of a tree?
He feedeth on ashes: a deceived heart hath turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, Is there not a lie in my right hand?

Acts 7:41
And they made a calf in those days, and offered sacrifice unto the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands.

• This is what we call RELIGION
  • Reject the true God
  • Make a false god
  • Sacrifice to that false god
  • Rejoice in your own works
• God's plan for them and us and all of mankind was always GRACE
  • Believe and accept God
  • Reject all false gods and all religions
  • Recognize He alone is the sacrifice for your sins
  • Rejoice in Him and His Works

Acts 7:42
Then God turned, and gave them up to worship the host of heaven; as it is written in the book of the prophets, O ye house of Israel, have ye offered to me slain beasts and sacrifices by the space of forty years in the wilderness?

• Astrology, divinations, magicians, prognosticators, all part of the same paganism enjoyed today as then.
• Joseph encountered them, as did Moses, Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, Abednigo

Genesis 41:8
And it came to pass in the morning that his spirit was troubled; and he sent and called for all the magicians of Egypt, and all the wise men thereof: and Pharaoh told them his dream; but there was none that could interpret them unto Pharaoh.

Daniel 1:20
And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king enquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm.

Exodus 7:11
Then Pharaoh also called the wise men and the sorcerers: now the magicians of Egypt, they also did in like manner with their enchantments.

• This symbol is made of six triangles, originally representing "The Land of the Spirits"

• Rome called it Saturn (planetary name for satan)
• On the popes' fish god hat
• Was a mark of shame on Jews by Hitler
• This was then brought to the Knesset, as the symbol of Zionism
• It is incorporated into the symbol for the Israeli version of the Red Cross

But ye have borne the tabernacle of your Moloch and Chiun your images, the star of your god, which ye made to yourselves. Acts 7:44
Our fathers had the tabernacle of witness in the wilderness, as he had appointed, speaking unto Moses, that he should make it according to the fashion that he had seen.

• The tabernacle was a shadow of things to come, which was its witness
• Moses had to mediate the fashion of the tabernacle to them, as only he knew it.

And look that thou make them after their pattern, which was shewed thee in the mount.

Hebrews 8:5
Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount.

Acts 7:45
Which also our fathers that came after brought in with Jesus into the possession of the Gentiles, whom God drave out before the face of our fathers, unto the days of David;

• If your Bible does not read "JESUS" here,it is in error.
• The word means "JESUS", not "JOSHUA".
• The English translation is the word JOSHUA from the GREEK JOSHUA!
• The Hebrew to the Greek is two different words for Jesus and Joshua
• You can do the translations on the web on numerous translational web sites
• God's sovereignty is what gave them the Promised Land, not their efforts

Leviticus 26:7-8
And ye shall chase your enemies, and they shall fall before you by the sword. And five of you shall chase an hundred, and an hundred of you shall put ten thousand to flight: and your enemies shall fall before you by the sword.

2 Samuel 7:12-13

• David found the favor, and did not get to build it.

Acts 7:48-49
Howbeit the most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands; as saith the prophet, Heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool: what house will ye build me? saith the Lord: or what is the place of my rest?

• He is saying it because the prophet said it. The prophet said it because they believed God could live in a house that they made
• In other words, their God was too small!

Isaiah 66:1
Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is the house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest?

1 Kings 8:27
But will God indeed dwell on the earth? behold, the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this house that I have builded?

2 Chronicles 2:6
But who is able to build him an house, seeing the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain him? who am I then, that I should build him an house, save only to burn sacrifice before him?

• "Their fathers" were not the believers, the real patriarchs, the followers of God. Their fathers were of a different father

Acts 7:52

• Apparently they could not even name any who did not kill prophets, since Stephen asked and they simply answered him with stones
• For prophesying of the Messiah, the suffering Messiah-and they were slain

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.

Acts 7:53
Who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it.

• National repentance by one man, for the nation and then rejected by the nation!

DISPOSITION, n. [L.]

1. The act of disposing, or state of being disposed.
2. Manner in which things or the parts of a complex body are placed or arranged; order; method; distribution; arrangement. We speak of the disposition of the infantry and cavalry of an army; the disposition of the trees in an orchard; the disposition of the several parts of an edifice, of the parts of a discourse, or of the figures in painting.
3. Natural fitness or tendency. The refrangibility of the rays of light is their disposition to be refracted. So we say, a disposition in plants to grow in a direction upwards; a disposition in bodies to putrefaction.
4. Temper or natural constitution of the mind; as an amiable or an irritable disposition.
5. Inclination; propensity; the temper or frame of mind, as directed to particular objects. We speak of the disposition of a person to undertake a particular work; the dispositions of men towards each other; a disposition friendly to any design.
6. Disposal; alienation; distribution; a giving away or giving over to another; as, he has made disposition of his effects; he has satisfied his friends by the judicious disposition of his property.

Galatians 3:19

Acts 7:54

• Gnashing the teeth is an extreme amount of anger
• To date, many of them are still gnashing their teeth, in addition to weeping

BRUXISM: GNASHING OF TEETH

Teeth grinding (bruxism) is involuntary clenching, grinding and gnashing of the teeth. It is thought that about half of the population bruxes from time to time, while around five per cent are habitual and forceful tooth grinders. It generally happens during sleep, but some people experience it when they are awake. Bruxism can be a physical expression of stress; for example, susceptible people may tend to grind their teeth when they are angry, concentrating hard on a particular task or feeling anxious.

• His reaction is not fear, with them gnashing and closing in
• This is not the first death of a member of "The Way" by these men's hands
• He was "full of the Holy Ghost (did not speak in tongues, heal, do signs and wonders), and he already had the Holy Ghost from prior to this
• Jesus is standing, not sitting...

Acts 7:56
And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.

• A vision of where he is about to be in seconds
• It does not say they or anyone else nearby saw this; this is for him and him alone

Acts 7:57
Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord,

• They did not want to hear about Heaven, the Son of Man who they knew and had killed, or God on His Throne so badly they put their hands to their ears
• The leaders of God's chosen people acted exactly like atheists do today

Acts 7:58
And cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man's feet, whose name was Saul.

• "Out of the city, for he is a blasphemer!"
• Being taken out of the city was for lepers, blasphemers, accursed ones sentenced to death for crimes against God and Israel
• They gave Saul their coats because, like a school yard fight or street brawl, people always say, "Hold my coat, will ya please?" because they have physical business to do

Leviticus 24:23
And Moses spake to the children of Israel, that they should bring forth him that had cursed out of the camp, and stone him with stones. And the children of Israel did as the LORD commanded Moses.

• They probably could not silence him fast enough!
• It does not record a trial, or charges read-they heard his testimony and that was it

Acts 7:60
And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

• The epitome of Christ-likeness-forgiveness for them killing him
• IT was not their only sin, just the only one against him
