Genesis Chapter 34a

Genesis Chapter 34

(Genesis 34:1 [KJV])

And Dinah the daughter of Leah, which she bare unto Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the

land.

· She is called both "the daughter of Leah" and "the daughter of Jacob", but not for the other children. Dinah was special as the only girl, an apple of God's eye
The exception is (Genesis 46:8 [KJV]) And these are the names of the children of Israel, which came into Egypt, Jacob and his sons: Reuben, Jacob's firstborn.

· Even Joseph was not called like that and he was the favorite of Jacob: (Genesis 37:3)

· Jacob has pitched his tent here and bought land from the locals, but this is a little too close for safety sake

· When arriving at a new place, exploration is the first thing on anyone's mind, and Dinah is no exception

· "What is this place like?" "What are the people like here?" "Can I make some new friends?"

· The Canaanites were not nice people as it was, and they were in Canaanite territory

· Dinah had eleven brothers, so no female friends

And afterwards she bare a daughter, and called her name Dinah.

(Genesis 34:2 [KJV])

And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her, and lay

with her, and defiled her.

· Remember Jacob bought the land for the altar from this man

· Apparently Dinah was prettier than the women of Shechem

· Apparently also there was no self-control or laws or customs against this defiling

· Prince of "the country" The country is Canaanite country

· She was unattached, of different people, different culture and, in that culture, "fair game"

· This is especially true when you are close to the chieftain off the village

· Promiscuity abounded, so Dinah was in danger as it was

· This is the "lust of the flesh"

For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not

of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that

doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

(Genesis 34:3 [KJV])

And his soul clave unto Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the damsel, and spake kindly unto

the damsel.

· This is the "lust of the eyes"

· After he violates her, then he loves her?

· Even in these cultures there was a marriage process, herein violated

· It was to first fall in love, second your parents ask for her hand to her father, third if approved, get married

· This was especially so to the Jews, which marriage process was long, with the betrothal, and represents a perfect picture of the relationship between Christ and the Bride, His wife (Us)...we are in the betrothal period now, of an unknown, predetermined exact amount of time, only know to the Father-at least while Jesus was on earth

Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. And five of them were wise, and five were foolish.

They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.

While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.

Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps.

And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out.

But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.

And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut. Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us.

But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not.

Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.

And Shechem spake unto his father Hamor, saying, Get me this damsel to wife.

· The lust of the eyes, the lust of the eyes complete,

· This is Shechem now turning to the "pride of life"

· Children demanding of their parents......this can never be good

(Genesis 34:5 [KJV])

And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter: now his sons were with his cattle in the

field: and Jacob held his peace until they were come.

· She was defiled, this was no accident this was rape

· The anger inside of Jacob was building, much more so having to wait for his sons by himself, silently

(Genesis 34:6 [KJV])

And Hamor the father of Shechem went out unto Jacob to commune with him.

· Hamor and Jacob have very little in common, especially now amity, community, mutual respect, etc.

· Both Hamor and Shechem are present at this conversation (v.11)

(Genesis 34:7 [KJV])

And the sons of Jacob came out of the field when they heard it: and the men were grieved, and they

were very wroth, because he had wrought folly in Israel in lying with Jacob's daughter; which thing

ought not to be done.

· What they heard was what Shechem did

(Genesis 34:8 [KJV])

And Hamor communed with them, saying, The soul of my son Shechem longeth for your daughter: I

pray you give her him to wife.

· Knowing what his son did, this really just shows a careless dad and a culture of excused lust

· There is no indication of an apology or asking for forgiveness, just asking for her hand in marraige?

· The father obviously only cares about his son's needs rather than Jacob's daughter Dinah

(Genesis 34:9 [KJV])

And make ye marriages with us, and give your daughters unto us, and take our daughters unto you.

· The Jews were not to marry outsiders who were not believers, yet the attempts to pollute the line of the Messiah are going to be unceasing throughout her history.

· There is no Law as of yet, but the Abrahamites know what God wants

· Abraham knew the rules, Esau broke them

· The sons and daughters being given to their enemies was actually a curse, not a practice

And I will make thee swear by the LORD, the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, that thou

shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell:

(Genesis 28:6 [KJV])

When Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob, and sent him away to Padanaram, to take him a wife

from thence; and that as he blessed him he gave him a charge, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife

of the daughters of Canaan;

(Genesis 36:2 [KJV])

Esau took his wives of the daughters of Canaan; Adah the daughter of Elon the Hittite, and
Aholibamah the daughter of Anah the daughter of Zibeon the Hivite;

(Exodus 34:16 [KJV])

And thou take of their daughters unto thy sons, and their daughters go a whoring after their gods,

and make thy sons go a whoring after their gods.

A CURSE

(Deuteronomy 28:32 [KJV])

Thy sons and thy daughters shall be given unto another people, and thine eyes shall look, and fail

with longing for them all the day long: and there shall be no might in thine hand.

(Genesis 34:10 [KJV])

And ye shall dwell with us: and the land shall be before you; dwell and trade ye therein, and get you

possessions therein.

· Financial incentive, or bribe?

· Land and business, in a rich land which would later on be theirs

(Genesis 34:11 [KJV])

And Shechem said unto her father and unto her brethren, Let me find grace in your eyes, and what

ye shall say unto me I will give.

· Both Hamor and Shechem are present at this conversation

· Rich dads spend a lot to spoil their kids, often

(Genesis 34:12 [KJV])

Ask me never so much dowry and gift, and I will give according as ye shall say unto me: but give me

the damsel to wife.

· This is an open bribe

· Whatever it takes to get Dinah for Shechem,

(Genesis 34:13-14 [KJV])

And the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father deceitfully, and said, because he

had defiled Dinah their sister: And they said unto them, We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to

one that is uncircumcised; for that were a reproach unto us:

· They answered DECEITFULLY

· The bribe is irrelevant and it is not a dowry to Jacob's sons

· The family of Jacob has been shamed, disgraced by this fiasco. To ask for her hand in marriage now is even more disgraceful that just the rape. It is salt into wounds

· To take a bribe now would simply exacerbate the situation

REPROACH, v.t. [L. prox, in proximus.]

1. To censure in terms of opprobrium or contempt.

Mezentius with his ardor warm'd his fainting friends, reproach'd their shameful flight, repell'd the victors.

2. To charge with a fault in severe language.

That shame there sit not, and reproach us as unclean.

3. To upbraid; to suggest blame for any thing. A man's conscience will reproach him for a criminal, mean or unworthy action.

4. To treat with scorn or contempt. Luke 6.

REPROACH, n.

1. Censure mingled with contempt or derision; contumelious or opprobrious language towards any person; abusive reflections; as foul-mouthed reproach.

2. Shame; infamy; disgrace.

Give not thine heritage to reproach. Joel 2. Isa 4.

3. Object of contempt, scorn or derision.

Come, and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we may be no more a reproach. Neh 2.

4. That which is the cause of shame or disgrace. Gen 30.

(Isaiah 4:1 [KJV])

And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, We will eat our own bread, and

wear our own apparel: only let us be called by thy name, to take away our reproach.

(Joel 2:17 [KJV])

Let the priests, the ministers of the LORD, weep between the porch and the altar, and let them

say, Spare thy people, O LORD, and give not thine heritage to reproach, that the heathen should

rule over them: wherefore should they say among the people, Where is their God?

(Genesis 34:15 [KJV])

But in this will we consent unto you: If ye will be as we be, that every male of you be circumcised;

· The covenant of the circumcision was given to Abraham, to Jews only

· To do this meant nothing to a Canaanite, since they had no intention of joining the Jews' belief in God

· It also meant nothing to the sons of Jacob, since they knew these Canaanites were not about to give up their religion, circumcised or not

(Genesis 17:10 [KJV])

This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man

child among you shall be circumcised.

(Genesis 34:16 [KJV])

Then will we give our daughters unto you, and we will take your daughters to us, and we will dwell

with you, and we will become one people.

· While this is currently a ruse, this is two things: A violation of God's Law, and a future thing Israel would often be happy to just do anyways

(Genesis 34:17 [KJV])

But if ye will not hearken unto us, to be circumcised; then will we take our daughter, and we will be

gone.

· A great manipulation technique, playing on their lusts

· They want all of them circumcised, not just Shechem, or even him and his dad

· Do the boys really plan on leaving without their father? No

(Genesis 34:18 [KJV])

And their words pleased Hamor, and Shechem Hamor's son.

· They either do not know what circumcision is or

· They do know, and are so filled with lust that they will do anything to get Dinah

· The enemy is using them to pollute Israel

· God will use it to move Jacob out

(Genesis 34:19 [KJV])

And the young man deferred not to do the thing, because he had delight in Jacob's daughter: and he

was more honourable than all the house of his father.

· When lust comes into a heart, the timeframe is always shortened

· It would seem that Shechem is sincere about Dinah; or is it "just the lust"?

(Genesis 34:20-21 [KJV])

And Hamor and Shechem his son came unto the gate of their city, and communed with the men of

their city, saying, These men are peaceable with us; therefore let them dwell in the land, and trade

therein; for the land, behold, it is large enough for them; let us take their daughters to us for wives,

and let us give them our daughters.

· To this day, that same attitude continues........land for peace then, MORE land for peace, and so on

· The enemy is never satisfied until Israel no longer exists but, thankfully, God will never let that happen

· Trade, intermarrying, polluting the seed of Israel, peace, land, nothing ever changes

(Genesis 34:22 [KJV])

Only herein will the men consent unto us for to dwell with us, to be one people, if every male

among us be circumcised, as they are circumcised.

· "This is all ya gotta do"

· Add to the trade, intermarrying, polluting the seed of Israel, peace, land, nothing ever changes...UNITY!

(Genesis 34:23 [KJV])

Shall not their cattle and their substance and every beast of theirs be ours? only let us consent unto

them, and they will dwell with us.

· Trade, money (cattle, substance) , polluting the seed of Israel, land

(Genesis 34:24 [KJV])

And unto Hamor and unto Shechem his son hearkened all that went out of the gate of his city; and

every male was circumcised, all that went out of the gate of his city.

· This is the preparation for the final part of the plan.

· This Hamor and Shechem apparently had some clout, which would explain the rape ad then the command to "get for me to be my wife"

· This is the pride and arrogance of power and influence

(Genesis 34:25 [KJV])

And it came to pass on the third day, when they were sore, that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon

and Levi, Dinah's brethren, took each man his sword, and came upon the city boldly, and slew all the

males.

· Not that God excuses this execution without a trial, but really this shows the heart of man on both sides

o Lust, pride, sin, rape

o Deceit, malice, wrath, vengeance, death

· They slew "all of the males".........add to that list above......bloodlust.

(Romans 12:19 [KJV])

Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written,

Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.

(James 1:15 [KJV])

Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth

death.

(Genesis 34:26 [KJV])

And they slew Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah out of

Shechem's house, and went out.

· This shows that they even handed Dinah over to Shechem and Hamor

(Genesis 34:27-29 [KJV])

The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and spoiled the city, because they had defiled their sister.

They took their sheep, and their oxen, and their asses, and that which was in the city, and that

which was in the field, And all their wealth, and all their little ones, and their wives took they

captive, and spoiled even all that was in the house.

· Deceit, malice, wrath, vengeance, death, bloodlust, thievery, kidnapping

· They lied, stole wealth, murdered, kidnapped

· Would not God have just taken His own vengeance on Hamor, Shechem, the population of they had just let it go?

· There was no command from God to do this, not from Jacob either

(Genesis 34:30 [KJV])

And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, Ye have troubled me to make me to stink among the inhabitants

of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites: and I being few in number, they shall gather

themselves together against me, and slay me; and I shall be destroyed, I and my house.

· So on top of everything else, this now results in a people who previously were pagans, trying to pollute Israel, and who had no respect for the women of Israel, no wanting them gone and or dead.

· These are not people under any law whose god was Holy, these are lawless people who have no desire to do what is right, but will now simply try to destroy Jacob and his family, because of two boys, Simeon and Levi

· Jacob forgets that God has his back. He and his house will not be destroyed, ever.

And they said, Should he deal with our sister as with an harlot?

· They have wiped out the men of the city, not just the man who raped their sister

· This was not just personal, it was their personal crusade.

Acts Chapter 13

THE TRANSITION

"...and unto the uttermost part of the earth"

Galatians 3:8
And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.

It all started with the Jerusalem Period, then on to Samaria, Judea, now to "the ends of the earth". Peter is now not heard from; Paul takes over as point man.

Acts 13:1
Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.

This had happened before with Stephen and others, for ministry to the Jews
The transition from Jew to Gentile is complete, so now it is church building time
Paul was told this day would arrive, and so it has
This kicks off the missions to the Gentiles' lands, the establishment of Gentile churches in Asia Minor, Turkey, Greece, Rome, and throughout the world, eventually westward into England and America, where we benefit from this work today
Herod the Tetrarch: Herod Antipater, "Herod Antipas" (nickname), same Herod who had John the Baptist and Jesus executed
He ruled after Herod the Great died in 4 B.C. the Herod who tried to have all children under two slaughtered in Israel
The Old Testament Scribe, Pharisee and Rabbi who taught the Old Testament only, without Christ, now will have to show Christ IN the OLD Testament to Jew and Gentile
This is how Jesus did it after the Resurrection

HEROD ANTIPAS

Mark 6:17-28
For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John, and bound him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife: for he had married her. For John had said unto Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother's wife. Therefore Herodias had a quarrel against him, and would have killed him; but she could not: For Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just man and an holy, and observed him; and when he heard him, he did many things, and heard him gladly.
And when a convenient day was come, that Herod on his birthday made a supper to his lords, high captains, and chief estates of Galilee; And when the daughter of the said Herodias came in, and danced, and pleased Herod and them that sat with him, the king said unto the damsel, Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt, and I will give it thee. And he sware unto her, Whatsoever thou shalt ask of me, I will give it thee, unto the half of my kingdom.
And she went forth, and said unto her mother, What shall I ask? And she said, The head of John the Baptist. And she came in straightway with haste unto the king, and asked, saying, I will that thou give me by and by in a charger the head of John the Baptist. And the king was exceeding sorry; yet for his oath's sake, and for their sakes which sat with him, he would not reject her.
And immediately the king sent an executioner, and commanded his head to be brought: and he went and beheaded him in the prison, And brought his head in a charger, and gave it to the damsel: and the damsel gave it to her mother.

Luke 23:7-11
And as soon as he knew that he belonged unto Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who himself also was at Jerusalem at that time. And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad: for he was desirous to see him of a long season, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to have seen some miracle done by him.
Then he questioned with him in many words; but he answered him nothing. And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused him. And Herod with his men of war set him at nought, and mocked him, and arrayed him in a gorgeous robe, and sent him again to Pilate.

Acts 6:4-7
But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word. And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch:
Whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them. And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.

Acts 9:15
But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel:

Luke 24:27
And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

Acts 13:2
As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.

This is for the purpose of seeking God's will for this new ministry, foreign hitherto until now, to them.

1 Samuel 2:18
But Samuel ministered before the LORD, being a child, girded with a linen ephod.

1 Samuel 3:1
And the child Samuel ministered unto the LORD before Eli. And the word of the LORD was precious in those days; there was no open vision.

Acts 13:3
And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.

The sending church is a Gentile church, in Antioch.
The first sending of missionaries
Praying, laying on of hands, simply makes all partners in the work

Acts 13:4
So they, being sent forth by the Holy Ghost, departed unto Seleucia; and from thence they sailed to Cyprus.

This is the first missionary journey, into the Galatian area
When people are separated for ministry, they are going, the rest are staying and collecting donations to support them
Being called is by sovereign grace
They had hands laid on them by the Church, but the Holy Ghost who spoke to them is the real sender
The reasons Paul would be in the synagogue on the Sabbath are:
1. Available building (no church buildings; church not built yet)
2. Ready made audience
3. Free access, being Jews
4. This was a transition from JEW to Gentile

Acts 13:5
And when they were at Salamis, they preached the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews: and they had also John to their minister.

This is John Mark
The Synagogue is his springboard, launching point for Paul

Acts 13:6
And when they had gone through the isle unto Paphos, they found a certain sorcerer, a false prophet, a Jew, whose name was Barjesus:

God had them prophesy...the enemy has his own prophets
The timing is right behind the real prophets
Sorcery, occultic darkness, and false prophecy go hand in hand
The world and the weak love false teachers, prophets who are generally nice, "harmless", inoffensive to them, and all around nice guys, not realizing that they are the blind leading the blind
They were warned
Our only protections against false teachers and prophets is being in the Word, and prayer
Paul himself even warned of this at the end of his ministry, that false teachers would enter into their number; he called them "grievous wolves"
Paul even warned of his own nature in 2 Corinthians 13:2 that he would confront the sins he saw head on, even from a distance!

GRIE'VOUS, a. [from grieve, or grief.] Heavy; oppressive; burdensome; as a grievous load of taxes.

Afflictive; painful; hard to be borne.
Correction is grievous to him that forsaketh the way. Prov 15.
Causing grief or sorrow.
The thing was very grievous in Abraham's sight, because of his son. Gen 21.
Distressing.
The famine was very grievous in the land. Gen 12.
Great; atrocious.
Because their sin is very grievous. Gen 18.
Expressing great uneasiness; as a grievous complaint.
Provoking; offensive; tending to irritate; as grievous words. Prov 15.
Hurtful; destructive; causing mischief; as grievous wolves. Acts 20. Luke 6:26

Luke 6:26
Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets.

Acts 20:29-31
For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them. Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears.

2 Corinthians 13:2
I told you before, and foretell you, as if I were present, the second time; and being absent now I write to them which heretofore have sinned, and to all other, that, if I come again, I will not spare:

1 John 4:1
Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

2 Peter 2:1
But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.

Acts 13:7
Which was with the deputy of the country, Sergius Paulus, a prudent man; who called for Barnabas and Saul, and desired to hear the word of God.

The last name is Paul, and this is where God decides to change Saul's name to Paul, verse nine after this one
Sergio in Latin may mean "Servant" (unknown)

Acts 13:8
But Elymas the sorcerer (for so is his name by interpretation) withstood them, seeking to turn away the deputy from the faith.

Whenever God is doing something grand, the enemy tries to stifle it, without fail.
God always wins
Nothing changes today, when someone wants to go to a Bible Study, inquire of the LORD from a Christian, someone seems to always intervene to prevent it

Acts 13:9
Then Saul, (who also is called Paul,) filled with the Holy Ghost, set his eyes on him,

Saul in Hebrew means "asked for, prayed for", since King Saul was the first King Israel asked for in 1 Samuel
Paul comes from the Latin, (Roman) family name Paulus, which meant "small" or "humble". Paul was a Roman citizen, so this must be which language meaning it would have had
It is believed that Paul was a short man
Paul set his eyes on him............he stared, glared, as if to say, "You! Yeah you!"

1 Samuel 8:4-5
Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah, And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.

Acts 22:25-28
And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said unto the centurion that stood by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman, and uncondemned? When the centurion heard that, he went and told the chief captain, saying, Take heed what thou doest: for this man is a Roman.
Then the chief captain came, and said unto him, Tell me, art thou a Roman? He said, Yea.
And the chief captain answered, With a great sum obtained I this freedom. And Paul said, But I was free born.

Acts 13:10
And said, O full of all subtilty and all mischief, thou child of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord?

Paul, speaking the truth in love
Sometimes it is prudent to simply address issues without mincing words
Paul was known for being harsh
One thing most Christians are unaware of is that God does not change our personality when we get saved. He simply cleans us up and uses that personality

Acts 13:11
And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon thee, and thou shalt be blind, not seeing the sun for a season. And immediately there fell on him a mist and a darkness; and he went about seeking some to lead him by the hand.

It must be acknowledged that this is by Paul's admission "the hand of the LORD", not the hand of Paul
Would to God we had that power at times in our own lives! There would be a long line of blind people!
He was already deliberately and willingly spiritually blind. This was just physical, temporal

Acts 13:12
Then the deputy, when he saw what was done, believed, being astonished at the doctrine of the Lord.

Evidently, Paul did not even have to say much directly. The foreknowledge he had of the Gospel, the apostles doctrine and work, was simply confirmed by this miracle before his eyes.
The Gospel is the doctrine here and it, and not the miracle seen, amazed him
This does not happen today, since we have the the Word of God in the Scriptures, complete
This is a Gentile man, so no tongues are spoken
God seems to have brought them here for just this one man

Acts 13:13
Now when Paul and his company loosed from Paphos, they came to Perga in Pamphylia: and John departing from them returned to Jerusalem.

This whole area was the Galatian territory
PAPHOS: Southwest part of the island of Cyprus, worship of Aphrodite
PERGA: Capitol of Pamphylia, today it is in Turkey
There is no mention of why John departed, but it may be one of two reasons: disagreement, or a calling to Jerusalem

Acts 13:14
But when they departed from Perga, they came to Antioch in Pisidia, and went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and sat down.

Notice they went into the SYNAGOGUE on the Sabbath, not to CHURCH!
Thus starts a Gentile ministry in a Jewish setting
The church is not to keep the Sabbath at all, but the Jews were. Our Sabbath is Jesus Christ, with a study on that here.

Nehemiah 8:5
And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people; (for he was above all the people;) and when he opened it, all the people stood up:

Luke 4:16-20
And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.
And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.

Acts 13:15
And after the reading of the law and the prophets the rulers of the synagogue sent unto them, saying, Ye men and brethren, if ye have any word of exhortation for the people, say on.

This speech Paul gives is a spark for a rebellion/rejection which is unleashed on Christians that continues throughout the rest of Acts.
It must have been the look on their face or the fact that they were not regulars, locals, residents
These are the RULERS of the Synagogue, so remember all that goes with it in the earthly realm-power, prestige, nice clothes, expensive homes, nice trappings, etc.
Translation of their message:
"We want to make believe we are interested in what you have to say, until you mention Jesus, how He was crucified, the prophecies concerning Him"
the Part about the founding of the nation of Israel, Saul as first king, David as a good king, etc,is great.

Acts 13:16
Then Paul stood up, and beckoning with his hand said, Men of Israel, and ye that fear God, give audience.

To the Jew first...is here and now, for the moment, in this synagogue
"Ye men of Israel", the Jews present
"and ye that fear God", with the comma, is the proselytes present

Acts 13:17
The God of this people of Israel chose our fathers, and exalted the people when they dwelt as strangers in the land of Egypt, and with an high arm brought he them out of it.

This is a direct claim that God chose Israel, they are the chosen people through whom the Messiah he is about to speak of came through, whose land is the land of Israel, granted to them forever.
In the human realm, God did everything for Israel
He made them larger than life to Egypt and all of the nations they were to conquer
He put fear into their hearts so that Israel could simply take over
He often destroyed the enemies without them, for them

Acts 13:18
And about the time of forty years suffered he their manners in the wilderness.

This is the grumbling after the Exodus, during the wandering period
Through all of their griping, grumbling, God did not let their shoes wear out, etc.

THE MANNERS OF ISRAEL

AGAINST LEADERS

Exodus 32:1
And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down out of the mount, the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron, and said unto him, Up, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.

AGAINST LACK OF WATER

Exodus 17:2-3
Wherefore the people did chide with Moses, and said, Give us water that we may drink. And Moses said unto them, Why chide ye with me? wherefore do ye tempt the LORD? And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses, and said, Wherefore is this that thou hast brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?

AGAINST LACK OF FOOD

Numbers 11:4-6
And the mixt multitude that was among them fell a lusting: and the children of Israel also wept again, and said, Who shall give us flesh to eat? We remember the fish, which we did eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlick: But now our soul is dried away: there is nothing at all, beside this manna, before our eyes.

Exodus 16:2-3
And the whole congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness: And the children of Israel said unto them, Would to God we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the flesh pots, and when we did eat bread to the full; for ye have brought us forth into this wilderness, to kill this whole assembly with hunger.

AGAINST THE PROMISED LAND

Numbers 13:32-14:4
And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature. And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.
Numbers 14:1 And all the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night. And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron: and the whole congregation said unto them, Would God that we had died in the land of Egypt! or would God we had died in this wilderness! And wherefore hath the LORD brought us unto this land, to fall by the sword, that our wives and our children should be a prey? were it not better for us to return into Egypt?
And they said one to another, Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt.

THE LONGSUFFERING OF GOD

Exodus 34:6
And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth,

Numbers 14:18
The LORD is longsuffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation.

Psalms 86:15
But thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion, and gracious, longsuffering, and plenteous in mercy and truth.

Jeremiah 15:15
O LORD, thou knowest: remember me, and visit me, and revenge me of my persecutors; take me not away in thy longsuffering: know that for thy sake I have suffered rebuke.

This is, of course, the entire book of Judges
Because of their collective sins of idolatry, God did not completely wipe out the enemies, but left remnants
It because a vicious cycle of sin, rebellion, moaning, groaning,repentance, deliverance, and finally a return to their idolatry
These nations were to be a thorn in their side for their rebellion

Judges 2:16-23
Nevertheless the LORD raised up judges, which delivered them out of the hand of those that spoiled them. And yet they would not hearken unto their judges, but they went a whoring after other gods, and bowed themselves unto them: they turned quickly out of the way which their fathers walked in, obeying the commandments of the LORD; but they did not so.
And when the LORD raised them up judges, then the LORD was with the judge, and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it repented the LORD because of their groanings by reason of them that oppressed them and vexed them.
And it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they returned, and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their own doings, nor from their stubborn way. And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel; and he said, Because that this people hath transgressed my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not hearkened unto my voice; I also will not henceforth drive out any from before them of the nations which Joshua left when he died:
That through them I may prove Israel, whether they will keep the way of the LORD to walk therein, as their fathers did keep it, or not. Therefore the LORD left those nations, without driving them out hastily; neither delivered he them into the hand of Joshua.

Acts 13:21

They desired a king because the other nations had kings
This is the heart of man: ENVY, and the nation of Israel always perfectly portrayed it
Today we say, "Johnny has a nice new red bike-I WANT ONE!"
God showed them the kind of king they would get-tall, dark, handsome, physically strong, "the lust of the flesh" (Genesis 3, 2 John 1:15)
This is contained in 1 Samuel 9, 10
But God looks on the heart
Samuel even fell for this when he was told to anoint David, the smallest boy, the youngest, certainly not the tallest. Think of David's lineage today!

1 Samuel 8:5-9
And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations. But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the LORD.
And the LORD said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them. According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, wherewith they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee.
Now therefore hearken unto their voice: howbeit yet protest solemnly unto them, and shew them the manner of the king that shall reign over them.

1 Samuel 9:2
And he had a son, whose name was Saul, a choice young man, and a goodly: and there was not among the children of Israel a goodlier person than he: from his shoulders and upward he was higher than any of the people.

1 Samuel 16:7
But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.

1 John 2:15-16

Acts 13:22

The result of God choosing the king and not the people is a godly king
Despite all of his faults, murder, adultery, David was still a man after God's own heart
Between slaying Goliath, the affair with Bathsheba, having Uriah her husband killed, spoiling Absalom, then cutting Saul slack, cutting Joab slack, being brave beyond words for a small man, and in the lineage of Jesus Christ and having a throne forever promised to be filled, David represents the nation

1 Samuel 13:14
But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee. Acts 13:23

Matthew 22:41-46

He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool?
If David then call him Lord, how is he his son? And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.

Acts 13:24-25
When John had first preached before his coming the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. And as John fulfilled his course, he said, Whom think ye that I am? I am not he. But, behold, there cometh one after me, whose shoes of his feet I am not worthy to loose.

This was not the Baptism of the Holy Ghost, as in a new belonging to the Church
It is an Old Testament baptism, by John the Baptist
In Acts 19, those baptized under that baptism were RE-baptized in th name of the LORD Jesus Christ

Mark 1:4
John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.

Luke 3:3
And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;

Acts 13:26
Men and brethren, children of the stock of Abraham, and whosoever among you feareth God, to you is the word of this salvation sent.

The stock of Abraham was the Jews present
"whosoever among" is the Gentile, Jewish proselytes

Acts 13:27
For they that dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor yet the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath day, they have fulfilled them in condemning him.

They had Jesus in their prophecies and did read about Jesus throughout their vast history, and ignored Him when He came
They fulfilled the prophecies about Jesus, without realizing it.
They still read the prophets today, and ignore Jesus in them to this day
Isaiah 53, Psalm 22, Isaiah 7:14, Zechariah 12, Daniel 9 all ignored then as now
This is because mankind's universal bent is away from God, chosen people or not

Acts 13:28
And though they found no cause of death in him, yet desired they Pilate that he should be slain.

Jesus was innocent and yet condemned, the Passover Lamb, spotless and clean
That they DESIRED that he should be slain is an understatement, they actually sought it, demanded it, forced it
Jesus was prophesied to be such
Jesus had precursors such as Isaac and the Passover lamb

John 1:36

They were done themselves fulfilling prophecies which foretold the Crucifixion
The prophecies of the Resurrection, Ascension and Return were future to this Crucifixion
This is Isaiah 53, Psalm 22 which is not answered in synagogues today and ignored if asked, often.

Psalms 22:16
For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.

Zechariah 12:10
And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.

Zechariah 13:6
And one shall say unto him, What are these wounds in thine hands? Then he shall answer, Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.

Acts 13:30
But God raised him from the dead:

This could not be fulfilled by any man, and was in spite of the Jews killing their Messiah
The most documented, legally, historically proven event from 2,000 years ago is the Resurrection of Jesus Christ
This Resurrection completes the process of destroying the stronghold of sin for us, and fulfills Genesis 3:15 after the fall

Genesis 3:15
And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

Matthew 28:6-7
He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you.

Mark 16:6
And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him.

Acts 13:31
And he was seen many days of them which came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are his witnesses unto the people.

Their eyewitness account is unimpeachable to this day
This is your witness also, the Resurrection is as much your hope as it was theirs
Galilee to Jerusalem is 150 km, close to 100 miles of people to witness the Resurrection

1 Corinthians 15:3-9
For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve:
After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. For I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.

1 Corinthians 15:12-19
Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead? But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen: And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.
Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not.For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised: And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins. Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished. If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.

Acts 13:32
And we declare unto you glad tidings, how that the promise which was made unto the fathers,

The promise made is from their Old Testament, in verses such as:
Genesis 3:15; Genesis 22:18; Genesis 26:4; Genesis 49:10; Deuteronomy 18:15; 2 Samuel 7:12; Psalm 132:11; Isaiah 4:2; Isaiah 7:14; Isaiah 9:6; Isaiah 40:10; Jeremiah 23:5; Jeremiah 33:14; Ezekiel 34:23; Ezekiel 37:24; Daniel 9:24-25;
Hundreds to thousands of other verses for this promise

Acts 13:33
God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee.

This verse is on the Resurrection, not the Virgin Birth (context, next verse)
Psalm verses 7-8, the eighth being about the Gentiles
The Jews were the children of the founding fathers, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, David, etc. by genealogy, in the flesh. Their citizenship is on earth, their land is Israel, their capital Jerusalem
We are the same as adopted children, in the Holy Ghost, in the Church, no citizenship on earth, but pilgrims having their citizenship in Heaven

Psalms 2:7-8
I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee. Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.

Acts 13:34
And as concerning that he raised him up from the dead, now no more to return to corruption, he said on this wise, I will give you the sure mercies of David.

Jesus Christ will reign on the throne of David forever.

2 Chronicles 6:16
Now therefore, O LORD God of Israel, keep with thy servant David my father that which thou hast promised him, saying, There shall not fail thee a man in my sight to sit upon the throne of Israel; yet so that thy children take heed to their way to walk in my law, as thou hast walked before me.

2 Chronicles 7:18
Then will I stablish the throne of thy kingdom, according as I have covenanted with David thy father, saying, There shall not fail thee a man to be ruler in Israel.

2 Chronicles 6:42
O LORD God, turn not away the face of thine anointed: remember the mercies of David thy servant.

Isaiah 55:3
Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David.

2 Samuel 7:16
And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever.

1 Kings 8:25
Therefore now, LORD God of Israel, keep with thy servant David my father that thou promisedst him, saying, There shall not fail thee a man in my sight to sit on the throne of Israel; so that thy children take heed to their way, that they walk before me as thou hast walked before me.

1 Kings 9:5
Then I will establish the throne of thy kingdom upon Israel for ever, as I promised to David thy father, saying, There shall not fail thee a man upon the throne of Israel.

Acts 13:35
Wherefore he saith also in another psalm, Thou shalt not suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

Holy One is Jesus, who was and is God, and did not stay in the tomb to rot, but was Resurrected after three days

1 Peter 3:18-19
For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;

Acts 13:36
For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption:

Though the lineage will continue forever, David was a mere, mortal, fleshy, sinful man
That said, his body of flesh remained on earth, his soul went to Heaven
That tomb today is venerated, a public tourist attraction on Mt. Moriah
There is even a Holocaust Museum there and a gilt statue of David there

1 Kings 2:10
So David slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David.

Acts 13:37
But he, whom God raised again, saw no corruption.

This repeats what was aid in verse 35

Acts 13:38
Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins:

Paul had the same message to all, always
The Gospel we preach should be the same
Death for our sins, Burial, Resurrection
This is also what Baptism is to represent

Acts 4:12
Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

1 Corinthians 15:2-7
By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. Acts 13:40
Beware therefore, lest that come upon you, which is spoken of in the prophets;

The prophets warned of doom, judgment for rejecting God and His salvation
The prophets were sometimes killed for it
Most were persecuted in some way, to varying degrees
None which prophesied doom and gloom were accepted; they (Israelites) had to then therefore endure the captivities first in order to repent

THE REJECTION OF THE PROPHETS

1 Kings 19:1-4
And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and withal how he had slain all the prophets [of BAAL]with the sword. Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying, So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by to morrow about this time. And when he saw that, he arose, and went for his life, and came to Beersheba, which belongeth to Judah, and left his servant there.
But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.

1 Kings 19:10
And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.

1 Kings 19:18
Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him.

Daniel 6:16
Then the king commanded, and they brought Daniel, and cast him into the den of lions. Now the king spake and said unto Daniel, Thy God whom thou servest continually, he will deliver thee.

Matthew 23:29-31
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous, And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets. Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.

Luke 11:47-51
Woe unto you! for ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. Truly ye bear witness that ye allow the deeds of your fathers: for they indeed killed them, and ye build their sepulchres.
Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they shall slay and persecute: That the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation; From the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zacharias, which perished between the altar and the temple: verily I say unto you, It shall be required of this generation.

Hebrews 11:32-38
And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets: Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.
Women received their dead raised to life again: and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection: And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment: They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented; (Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.

Acts 13:41
Behold, ye despisers, and wonder, and perish: for I work a work in your days, a work which ye shall in no wise believe, though a man declare it unto you.

That work is judgment which is coming, the Tribulation
Neither Jew nor Gentile, nor many even in the Body of Christ, believe judgment (Tribulation) is coming
Many deny the Rapture, but cannot use Scripture to substantiate, with verses in context

Acts 13:42
And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next sabbath.

The religious, non-believing Jews left the synagogue, seemingly with no fruit from Paul's speaking to them
It would appear that this was yet another ejection of a man of God
The Gentiles were then eager and free to pursue the truth on their own

Acts 13:43
Now when the congregation was broken up, many of the Jews and religious proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas: who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God.

Walking in Grace as opposed to walking in the Law
They were persuaded, meaning they understood, were convinced and did it

Acts 13:44
And the next sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God.

Persecution makes the Church grow
Revival is happening today like this, but only under persecution

Acts 13:45
But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy, and spake against those things which were spoken by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming.

Attention drawn away from those who want it, demand it always fills them with envy
Religious leaders always want attention, charisma or no charisma
This envy stems from pride as the root

Acts 13:46
Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles.

The switch to the Gentiles had come previously; this was the official announcement to these Jews
Again, this is "to the Jew first, and also to the Greek"
Waxing bold means they said this strongly, loudly, tersely-like a New Yorker would

Romans 1:16
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
Romans 2:10
But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:

Acts 13:47
For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth.

He quotes their Old Testament Scriptures to them, leaving the conviction to the Holy Spirit
This verse and others are commands to the Jews, to be a light to the Gentiles.

Isaiah 49:6
And he said, It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth.

Acts 13:48
And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed.

This is a verse on Predestination, God choosing us
However, we are also responsible to believe, accept the LORD Jesus Christ as our LORD and Saviour as well.
There is no such thing as automatic salvation for anyone

John 8:24
I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.

Acts 8:37
And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

Romans 10:10
For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Acts 13:49
And the word of the Lord was published throughout all the region.

The Word spread like wild fire
The word "publish" occurs twenty nine times in Scripture
It is a widespread written bit of information, designed to spread

"PUBLISHED"

PUB'LISH, v.t. [L.publico. See Public.]

To discover or make known to mankind or to people in general what before was private or unknown; to divulge, as a private transaction; to promulgate or proclaim, as a law or edict. We publish a secret, by telling it to people without reserve. Laws are published by printing or by proclamation. Christ and his apostles published the glad tidings of salvation.
Th' unwearied sun, from day to day,
Does his Creator's power display;
And publishes to every land
The work of an Almighty hand.
To send a book into the world; or to sell or offer for sale a book, map or print.
To utter; to put off or into circulation; as, to publish a forged or counterfeit paper.
To make known by posting, or by reading in a church; as, to publish bands of matrimony. We say also, the persons intending marriage are published; that is, their intention of marriage is published.

Deuteronomy 32:3
Because I will publish the name of the LORD: ascribe ye greatness unto our God.

1 Samuel 31:9
And they cut off his head, and stripped off his armour, and sent into the land of the Philistines round about, to publish it in the house of their idols, and among the people.

2 Samuel 1:20
Tell it not in Gath, publish it not in the streets of Askelon; lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph.

Nehemiah 8:15
And that they should publish and proclaim in all their cities, and in Jerusalem, saying, Go forth unto the mount, and fetch olive branches, and pine branches, and myrtle branches, and palm branches, and branches of thick trees, to make booths, as it is written.

Esther 1:20
And when the king's decree which he shall make shall be published throughout all his empire, (for it is great,) all the wives shall give to their husbands honour, both to great and small.

Psalms 26:7
That I may publish with the voice of thanksgiving, and tell of all thy wondrous works.

The Lord gave the word: great was the company of those that published it.

Isaiah 52:7
How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!

Jeremiah 4:5
Declare ye in Judah, and publish in Jerusalem; and say, Blow ye the trumpet in the land: cry, gather together, and say, Assemble yourselves, and let us go into the defenced cities.

Jeremiah 4:15
For a voice declareth from Dan, and publisheth affliction from mount Ephraim.

Jeremiah 50:2

And offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving with leaven, and proclaim and publish the free offerings: for this liketh you, O ye children of Israel, saith the Lord GOD.

Jonah 3:7
And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water:

Nahum 1:15
Behold upon the mountains the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace! O Judah, keep thy solemn feasts, perform thy vows: for the wicked shall no more pass through thee; he is utterly cut off.

Mark 1:45
But he went out, and began to publish it much, and to blaze abroad the matter, insomuch that Jesus could no more openly enter into the city, but was without in desert places: and they came to him from every quarter.

Mark 5:20
And he departed, and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him: and all men did marvel.

Mark 7:36
And he charged them that they should tell no man: but the more he charged them, so much the more a great deal they published it;

And the gospel must first be published among all nations.

Luke 8:39
Return to thine own house, and shew how great things God hath done unto thee. And he went his way, and published throughout the whole city how great things Jesus had done unto him.

Acts 10:37
That word, I say, ye know, which was published throughout all Judaea, and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached;

Acts 13:50
But the Jews stirred up the devout and honourable women, and the chief men of the city, and raised persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them out of their coasts.

The more religious and zealous, the more they persecute

Acts 13:51
But they shook off the dust of their feet against them, and came unto Iconium.

The shaking off of the dust was a testimony against them

It was leaving the area so much so, so thoroughly, that you brought nothing of the unbelievers with you

Matthew 10:14
And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet.
Mark 6:11
And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.
Acts 13:52
And the disciples were filled with joy, and with the Holy Ghost.

This is the obvious fruit of the spirit

Joy often is but should not be confused with happiness and smiling, laughing-it is inner peace, contentment

John 15:11
These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.
John 16:24
Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.

Galatians 5:22-23
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
